  Category Descriptions

 

1. Personal Interview Competition

The Judges Panel will interview each contestant individually. The purpose of interview in the USA system is to allow the judges some insight into the character of each contestant. During the interview the judges are afforded the opportunity to evaluate each contestantís basic qualities, such as intelligence, ability to communicate, attitude, etc. Interview is intended to be relaxed and professional. Suggested attire is casual daywear to professional business attire, although the contestant should wear what they feel comfortable wearing. The judges will only notice that it's neat and clean. Judging at Preliminaries leading to Mr. Gay USA will be comparative and ranked with a score of 20 points possible per judge. At the national contest, Preliminary Interview scores will be carried over to the final night Top 10.

Preliminary judging of Personal Interview at Nationals will be broken down into three sub-categories:
Content of Answer - Up to 10 points can be awarded per judge
Eye Contact / Posture - Up to 7 points can be awarded per judge
Overall Appearance - Up to 3 points can be awarded per judge

2. Club Wear Competition

Club Wear is defined as and outfits that are worn to clubs in the United States. They may vary from full leather outfit, to sequined shorts and a rhinestone tank top, to blue jeans and a flannel shirt. The judges are looking for style, fit, and presentation. The use of props in this category is not allowed. Each contestant will model individually for the judges, and then be brought back in their group for collective judging in comparative competition. This category is your chance to show personal style and individuality. Judging at Prelims leading to Mr. Gay USA and on Final Night of the national contest will be comparative and ranked with a score of 20 points possible per judge.

Preliminary Night judging of Club Wear at Nationals will be broken down into three sub-categories:
(a) Fit / Suitability - Up to 12 points can be awarded per judge
(b) Stage Presence / Modeling - Up to 5 points can be awarded per judge
(c) Hair Style / Outfit Accessories - Up to 3 points can be awarded per judge

3. Talent Competition

Talent can be any type of presentation, as long as it doesn't create danger to the contestant or any other person. Talents are limited to five minutes in length. There are no restrictions to the number of people involved in the talent. Music must be marked on track 1 of a CDR, with the contestants name clearly marked. Please always bring a back-up copy. All talent music is to be turned in at registration. Large props are not allowed in talent competition for Mr. Gay USA at the National Contest. Only carry on props (tables, chairs, etc) is allowed. No live animals, excessive body glitter, fire, water, or straw is allowed in Talent or any other category of competition. Judging at Prelims to Mr. Gay USA and on Final Night competition of Nationals will be on a comparative scale with a total possible score of 30 points per judge.

Preliminary Night judging of Talent will be broken down into four (4) sub-categories:
(a) Entertainment Value - Up to 12 points can be awarded per judge
(b) Overall Quality of Production - Up to 10 points can be awarded per judge
(c) Lip Sync / Live Presentation - Up to 5 points can be awarded per judge
(d) Back-up / Stage Presence - Up to 3 points can be awarded per judge

4. Swim Wear Competition

Swimwear is not a bodybuilding contest. The judges will be looking for overall physical fitness, confidence, poise, and fit of swimwear. Most types of swimwear are acceptable: briefs, square cuts, box cuts, Bermuda shorts, string bikinis, and speedos. Thongs are not allowed. Each contestant will compete individually in front of the judges, and then be brought back in a group for comparative judging. Back-up persons will not be allowed on stage during this category. Prelims to Mr. Gay USA and Final Night competition of Nationals will be on a comparative scale with a total possible score of 30 points per judge.

Preliminary Night judging of Swim Wear will be broken down into four (4) sub-categories:
(a) Cut / Fit - Up to 10 points can be awarded per judge
(b) Style / Color - Up to 10 points can be awarded per judge
(c) Stage Presentation / Modeling - Up to 5 points can be awarded per judge
(d) Physical Fitness - Up to 5 points can be awarded per judge
